Toyota suspends sale of Lexus GX 460

Al-Futtaim Motors the sole Toyota dealer in the country on Thursday said in a press statement that they have “temporarily suspended” sale of Lexus GX 460 from the UAE.

This comes a day after Toyota Motors suspended sales of the model in the US following a “do not buy” rating by a popular magazine. The press statement quoted Simon Frith, Managing Director of Al-Futtaim. “We temporarily suspended sales of this model following the concern regarding the response time of the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), under extreme cornering conditions. In the meantime we are working closely with Lexus to fully investigate this concern," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday when Emirates Business contacted Frith about the issue, he had said, “We have not suspended sales at the moment (in the UAE) and we are waiting for a word from Toyota Motor Corporation.”

Meanwhile the international media quoted Toyota Motors spokesperson saying that the sale of the model has been suspended globally including the Middle East and Russia. According to one estimate about 500 unites of the model were sold in Russia and Middle East. However, when the newspaper tried to confirm the figure with Frith he said, “I would not like to speculate anything on that.”

In the statement released on Thursday Frith further added, “We are contacting all our GX 460 customers to explain the situation and will keep them updated as more information becomes available. We will also provide a courtesy car if any customer who has purchased a GX460 is concerned about driving their vehicle. If any of our customers have further questions they can contact our Customer Care Team.”

Al-Futtaim Motors is working closely with the UAE's Ministry of Economy with regard to the resolution of the issue the statement added.
