He's known as the Asian Perez Hilton and has just been named one of the most powerful men in the new media by the United Kingdom's Independent.

Now Sheeraz Hasan, founder and CEO of America's Hollywood.tv paparazzi website, is ready to repeat his stateside success in the Emirates with a new online venture, Dubai.tv.

"It's certainly an exciting time for us," the British-born entrepreneur told Emirates Business. "We're aiming to make Dubai.tv one of the most accessed UAE websites, and it looks very promising."

Within a year, Hollywood.tv has become one of the top five celebrity gossip websites by running videos of celebrities out and about in Tinseltown. If a news network or other TV programme show the likes of Britney Spears dining at a restaurant or Lindsay Lohan shopping with Samantha Ronson, the chances are the clips were provided by Hasan's company.

The approach is different with Dubai.tv, which is already up and running but is set to launch officially in December. The plan is to show videos about everything from business and tourism – spotlighting new real estate projects and ventures as well as hotels, nightlife venues, shopping, and cultural landmarks – to entertainment – covering red carpet premieres and other celebrity-laden events.

In addition, there will be a half-hour weekly TV show on a yet-to-be-named UAE-based channel.

Hasan says the website, hosted by American-Arab presenter Janeen Mansour, will offer the most up-to-date media content in English, updated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The aim is to promote the city in the United States.

"Basically, it's Dubai as it happens," he said. "People in Hollywood and the rest of the US have little idea about the amazing things that happen in Dubai and that's a real shame. We're aiming to change that with Dubai.tv."

One Hollywood celebrity who does know all about Dubai is socialite Paris Hilton – and Hasan revealed she is planning to visit the UAE later this year. He would not say exactly when, but her arrival just might coincide with the official launch of Dubai.tv.

The blonde model, singer and actress talked about her interest in the emirate in an interview with Hasan that can be seen on Dubai.tv.

"I have never been there but I've heard the best things about it," she said.

"A lot of my friends talk about Dubai but nobody's ever been. So it'd be cool to check it out and then let everyone know in America what a cool place Dubai is."

She also revealed she may be interested in doing business in the region.

"I really want to get into real estate so maybe there I could think of launching a Paris hotel or maybe even a Paris island – I like that."

Hasan said: "I've known Paris for a while and what's great about her is that she works with the cameras to make the best for us and her. Plus, she is genuine. She is excited about coming over.

"Because Paris is such an international name and is followed everywhere, there will be huge media interest when she comes over to the UAE. Any interviews we conduct with her will go out to international media with the Dubai.tv logo, prompting everyone to start talking about the region.

"Everyone will see that the UAE – and the rest of the Middle East – isn't what it is portrayed to be most of the time in the West."

Another star who Hasan has spoken to about Dubai is Britney Spears.

In February a story appeared in British tabloid the Daily Star claiming that Spears was planning to perform in Dubai. And while the article was exaggerated, she was indeed all set to visit at the beginning of the year.

"I spoke to Britney about it, and at the beginning she really didn't know much about Dubai," said Hasan.

"However, the more we talked about it the more excited she became and she decided to go for it. She was going to come and seek funding for her tour, television show and there was also a real estate project."

Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Just a few days before the Gimmie More pop star was due to fly out she was rushed to hospital after a dramatic stand-off with police at her home and placed in psychiatric care. "That's when her father took control of everything she does, so obviously the plans fell through."

Nevertheless, Hasan remains confident that the singer will visit the region.

"Without a doubt Britney is the most sought-after star in the world, and proof of this is through the demand we get from networks and websites whenever we have a new video of her. At some point she will come here."

Hasan's ventures are sponsored by Hydra Properties – and this has turned the company's CEO Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim into the latest star in Tinseltown.

"As soon as you log on to Hollywood.tv you see the massive banners for Hydra. In fact, Hydra Properties is now the biggest known UAE-based real estate company abroad."

And Dr Al Fahim stole the show at the recent seventh Annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball, a star-studded event that celebrates changing lives through the creation of jobs, held in Los Angeles.

"Everybody was keen to meet Dr Al Fahim who raised awareness on the booming Abu Dhabi economy and the investment opportunities in the emirate. Celebrities like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher took his picture with him. It was amazing. He is the prince of Hollywood," he said.

"Because of Hydra's involvement, I have big studio executives and investors asking me about the UAE. Dr Al Fahim is also the face of the highly anticipated reality TV show Hydra Executives, so he is doing wonders for the UAE abroad."

Hasan's story would make a great Hollywood movie.

He was born in 1974 in London to first-generation Pakistani immigrants and his first taste of hard work – and success – came at the age of 16 when he took over his family's struggling restaurant business following the death of his father.

He renamed it the Tinseltown Café and turned it into a 24-hour Hollywood-themed eatery – and before long it was thriving.

However, he suddenly found himself wanting more – and that's when he decided to move to the United States. With no experience, skills, or contacts in the American showbiz industry and very little money in his pocket, Hasan soon had his own show, Tinseltown TV, thanks to a chance encounter with Rowland Perkins, founder of the biggest talent agency in the world, the Creative Artists' Agency.

This catapulted the then-unknown on to the Hollywood scene. By the end of the show's run he had produced and hosted more than 200 episodes, which were broadcast to 500 million people in 130 countries.

He also built a bridge between the two biggest film industries in the world, Hollywood – with 3.6 billion fans worldwide – and Bollywood with 3.8 billion fans.

"I am lucky but I really believe it is my faith that helped me become successful. Now we have all the contacts and networks and websites are constantly on the phone wanting content from us."

Hasan says Hollywood.tv is worth $1 billion (Dh3.6bn).

The company has proved so popular that its logo has been seen on television by an estimated one billion people in 270 countries.

"I have a great team that goes around the hotspots and whenever we receive information about a celebrity we're there straightaway. Stars love the exposure – it is a misconception they hate being hounded. They let the paparazzi know where they are – how else can the photographers be at the right place at the right time?"

But how does Hasan guarantee that none of his team sells videos to the networks themselves?

"They're paid very well," he said, smiling. "Now with Dubai.tv we can take a lot more content to Hollywood. Whenever a story breaks Janeen will be there with the Dubai.tv microphone."

Despite the fact Dubai.tv has not yet fully launched three big investors have already offered to buy it from Hasan, with one offer reaching a whopping $100 million. Just goes to show what you can achieve with an idea.
