The 110th bus shelter with fully operational air-conditioning has been opened in Dubai, the company behind the project has announced.

The shelter was opened in the Abu Hail district by Right Angle Media, which was awarded the contract to provide the shelters by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Shelters are now operational in high-traffic areas such as Deira, Jumeirah Beach Road, Mankhool and Dubai International Airport as well as The Palm Jumeirah and Al Hamriya Port.

"The fully operational 110th bus queue shelter is indicative of Right Angle Media and the RTA's commitment to serve the public by providing world-class public transport amenities," said the company's CEO, Raman Multani. "This move will encourage commuters and tourists alike to embrace public transport."

The announcement came as the company installed its 500th shelter in Al Qusais.

The Dh750 million project to provide air-conditioned bus shelters is one of the largest street furniture projects in the world. It is scheduled to last for more than 10 years on a design, build, operate and transfer basis. It will be run by Right Angle Media, which is selling ad space on the shelters.

Director of Operations Jim Davies said: "Right Angle Media continues to work at record speed, recently installing 14 shelters in a day. We have exceeded our installation targets by bringing the number to 500 installed shelters. By the end of the year we expect that 1,000 operational shelters will accommodate the growing population of Dubai."

The bus shelters offer companies a compelling advertising proposition.
