Two weekly publications under the umbrella of World View Communications (WVC), an arm of the Dubai World, have closed down "temporarily".

Al Alam and The World publications are now officially closed, according to the company's website.

The bilingual weekly, published by WVC, stopped its Arabic edition last week.

The website, categorically indicates its closure with an Arabic banner that conveys: "With deep regret, Al Alam is now closed, temporarily. We hope to relaunch soon."

However, the English edition that stopped earlier last month, still runs online.

The newspaper officials were unavailable for comment. Launched in 2007, the Arabic edition was followed a few months later by an English edition.

The vision of the publication was to be distributed for free all across the UAE.

The newspaper had an in-house distribution team in additional to a small editorial team of five.

According to informed sources, the staff was told to leave in mid-May and a few members were shifted to WVC.

The official website of the publications conveyed that Al Alam distributed 120,000 copies across shopping malls, gas stations, offices and residential areas, and was aiming at an expansion to the GCC and other Arab markets.

A 32-page colour tabloid, the newspaper covered local social and economic news. The English edition, The World, had a much smaller circulation of 10,000 copies, featuring on business, technology, fashion, society, films, health and travel. It was more specific to the Dubai audience.

WVC, the mother company was established in 2006 as the marketing arm of Dubai World, led by Dr Mohammad Ghobash, Executive Director, and Alia Sulaiman, General Manager. Its clients included Dubai World, DP World, Economic Zones World, Drydocks World and Dubai Multi Commodities Centre.
