Oman's government has awarded Oman National Engineering and Investment Co, a $33.78 million contract to build a 64 megawatt power station, a company official said on Tuesday.

Work on the Duqm project, located in eastern Oman, will start within a week and is scheduled for completion in 14 months, the official, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters by telephone.

The official did not want to be identified because the deal would be formally announced by the government next month. Oman's tender board informed Oman National Engineering that it had won the contract, the official said.

The firm, previously known as Oman National Electricity Co, manages power and desalination plants in addition to operating in the oil and gas sector, according to its website. (Reuters)
