Industries Qatar unit Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) is to open more offices in Asia and the Middle East this year as it seeks to increase sales, its general manager said in remarks published on Wednesday.

Qapco, which is 80 per cent owned by Qatar's largest company by market value, plans to open new offices in Thailand, Yemen and Jordan to meet growing chemical demand in those countries, the Peninsula reported, citing Youssef Al Mulla.

Qapco has 16 offices around the world including the Middle East, India, Pakistan and China.

Qatar's energy minister said on Tuesday the Gulf Arab state's petrochemicals output was expected to reach 18 million tonnes per year in 2012.

"This would make Qatar one of the world's largest producers of petrochemicals," Abdullah Al Attiyah said at the inauguration of the expansion of a petrochemicals plant, Qapco II. (Reuters)
