Dubai-based Gulf Energy Maritime (GEM), the Middle East's largest independent commercial product tanker operator, has appointed Mohamed Al Mehairi of International Petroleum Investment Company (Ipic) as its new chairman. The Abu Dhabi-based oil and chemicals foreign investment group owns 30 per cent shares in GEM.

Al Mehairi takes over from Khadem Al Qubaisi, who moves on to focus on his increasing roles in various governmental bodies.

Al Mehairi started his career with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in 1999, where he headed the Far East Area Crude and Condensate Division.
