RAK shelter a hope for animals

The plight of abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats in Ras Al Khaimah has an end in sight, thanks to the opening of the first animal shelter in RAK in March.

The RAK Animal Welfare Centre, the result of the endeavors of Canadian school teacher Melissa Davis and the support of Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, is a landmark development for animal welfare in the UAE.

In addition to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of dogs and cats, it will also provide sterilisation and immunisation treatments for strays. In fact, it was the suffering of stray dogs and cats that inspired its founding.

"When I first moved to RAK, I found it very hard to turn a blind eye to all the dogs and cats that needed feeding and a place to rest," said Davis.

The centre will rely on support from animal lovers in the early stages of its growth, both for fundraising and for help with the day-to-day running. Plans include a cattery and kenneling service, the proceeds from which will go towards medical costs. Bookings are being accepted for the summer.
