Dutch chip equipment maker ASML's order book is expected to show a continued improvement in the first quarter, with investors scrutinising results for signs of a structural recovery in the chip sector.

Analysts view the company's order book developments as a barometer for expectations of big chipmakers such as the world's largest Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's biggest contract chip maker. According to a Reuters poll Q1 bookings of semiconductor lithography machines, which map out electronic circuits on silicon wafers, are expected to be 43 compared with 40 in the previous quarter. ASML is the world's largest maker of such machines. It competes with Nikon and Canon.
