Telecom operator du on Sunday announced it had exceeded the two million customer mark. The benchmark was met less than 15 months after the launch of the company's mobile services.

"This is an important milestone for us," said CEO Osman Sultan.

"These figures are evidence that du has fully played its role in bringing real competition to the UAE telecommunications market.

"I would like to thank each and every one of our two million customers for their valuable trust.

"Our main focus in the future is to continue providing them with more innovative services. This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of the du family, starting with the chairman and directors and, of course, the 1,900 employees."

As part of efforts to encourage best practices and bring greater transparency to the market, du has begun to announce its number of active subscribers, as defined by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

Under the TRA's definition, any mobile customer who has made a call, sent a text message or MMS, or received a call within the last 90 days is considered an "active subscriber".

Meanwhile, Farid Faraidooni, executive vice-president, commercial, du, said: "This achievement has spurred us on to greater heights. Our customers, both business and consumer, can look forward to more innovative products and services from du, which will increase their convenience and comfort. We will also be expanding our retail network across the UAE to be more accessible to our customers."

Sultan added: "We are committed to reporting the number of active subscribers as we did in our 2008 first quarter results and will continue to do so on a quarterly basis."
