Abu Dhabi finalises Louvre artwork deal

A delegation from France visited Abu Dhabi to sign the deal, which covers the “look, feel and content” of the artworks to be displayed at the museum.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi will be part of the ambitious $27bn cultural district of Saadiyat Island, located 500 metres offshore Abu Dhabi City.

His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), and an official from the French Museums Agency signed the deal in the presence of French Culture Minister Christine Albanel.

“The accord covers our specific requirements to mount arts educational events in the UAE capital and provide a degree of training for nationals wishing to enter the sector for solid career opportunities,” said Sheikh Sultan.

“Together with our French partners we are progressing well on the Louvre Abu Dhabi which will be among the first of Saadiyat’s international cultural institutions to take shape.”

The full cost of the deal has not been disclosed, but is thought to approach $1bn, including the use of the Louvre name, the loan of artworks, and touring exhibition rights.

Other cultural attractions at Saadiyat will include the Sheikh Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and a performing arts centre designed by Zaha Hadid.
