The United States has welcomed the arrest in Rwanda of renegade Gen Laurent Nkunda, Congo’s most powerful warlord who has spent years fighting for supremacy in the northeastern part of the country.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood said on Friday the episode was “a good sign of co-operation” among the governments of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.

He would not say whether the United States – either the Obama administration or the Bush administration, which it replaced this week – played a role in Nkunda’s capture.

Wood said, however, that both President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will “take a very strong interest in trying to promote peace and stability on the (African) continent in general.”
