Abu Dhabi Municipality has signed a Dh753.7 million contract with Al Jaber Group for the construction of a new bridge at Mafraq.

Dr Juan Al Dhahiri, Chairman of the Municipal Affairs Department, said the project, which is part of the Abu Dhabi Development Plan 2030, involved expanding the existing interchange to provide a high standard of traffic safety and vehicle flow.

“The new expansion has been designed to serve the new massive urban and housing developments at Mafraq, Bani Yas, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed City, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed City, Shamekha and Falah,” he said.

The bridge is one of the oldest in Abu Dhabi’s transport network. It linked the UAE capital traffic from the Northern Emirates, Al Ain, Oman, the Western Region and Saudi Arabia.

Municipality Director-General Juma Al Junaibi said the new interchange will provide an effective solution to the growth of traffic in the busy Mafraq area.

“The upgrade seeks to ease the heavy traffic volumes generated by on-going development work in the area,” he added.

“The new interchange will consist of three levels of traffic, two viaducts and two loops as well as a 75-metre long main bridge with a total of eight lanes.”

The project involves the demolition of the existing bridge and the construction of the three-level interchange and reconstruction of 5km of the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain and Dubai-Sila roads as four-lane dual-carriageways plus slip and loop roads in the vicinity of the interchange. (Wam)
