Tropical Storm Fausto is nearing hurricane strength early on Friday in the Pacific, while Hurricane Elida has lost its status along with some of its strength.

The National Hurricane Centre in Miami, Florida, USA, says Fausto’s maximum sustained winds are near 112 kilometres per hour and the storm could become a hurricane later in the day. Fausto’s center is about 684 kilometers south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico.

Farther out in the Pacific, Elida was downgraded to a tropical storm with winds at about 105kph. Forecasters expect gradual weakening as Elida enters cooler waters over the next few days.

And in the open Atlantic, Tropical Storm Bertha’s maximum sustained winds are holding steady at 98kph. Bertha is moving northeast at 27kph and is located about 1,325km south of Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada.
