Afghan avalanches on a mountain pass north of Kabul may have killed up to 70 people, said government officials.

Interior Minister Hanif Atmar said yesterday that rescuers have already recovered 24 bodies but fear that more than 40 others have also died.

About 2,500 people have already been rescued from their snow-blocked vehicles.

Atmar said 128 injured people had been evacuated to hospitals.

Afghan officials did not give any indication that any troops from the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force were among those trapped or buried by the heavy snow slides.
