At least 17 people died and 35 were injured, many seriously, when a bus overturned on a busy national highway in northern Bangladesh on Saturday, police said.
The bus, packed with labourers heading to the capital Dhaka to seek work, flipped over as it crossed the Jamuna Bridge in northern Tangail district, senior police official Tofazzal Hossain said.
"Sixteen people died on the spot while another person died in hospital. At least 35 others were also hospitalised, mostly with critical injuries," he said.
Police were probing the cause of the accident.
The Jamuna Bridge road is notorious for having the nation's highest number of fatal accidents annually since being inaugurated in 1998. Each year hundreds of people die in accidents on the road. (AFP)
