Diabetes drug linked to two deaths in western China discovered for sale in other provinces

Chinese state media says a diabetes drug linked to two deaths in far western China has been found on store shelves in two other provinces.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the drug, called Tang Zhi Ning Jiao Nang, contained six times the normal amount of a chemical ingredient used to lower blood sugar.

Government Web site china.com.cn reported that 215 bottles of the drug were found in three cities in southwestern Sichuan province. China National Radio said 4,800 bottles were found in western China’s Qinghai province.

No new illnesses have been reported.

Two people died last month and nine were hospitalised in the Xinjiang region after taking the medicine.
