Suspected extortionists in bus shoot-out in southern Philippines

Suspected extortionists have opened fire on a passenger bus in the southern Philippines, wounding at least 11 people.

Regional military chief Lt. Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino says two gunmen attacked the bus late Saturday as it was traveling to Pagadian city in Zamboanga Sibugay province.

He said the driver was listed in serious condition on Sunday at a local hospital.

Extortion gangs and rebels are known to operate in that part of the country’s south. Much of the highway there has no street lights, making it dangerous for motorists to travel at night.
