Baghdad to lift curfew on Monday

A curfew in the Iraqi capital will be lifted from Monday morning after Shiite leader Moqtada Al Sadr ordered his fighters to withdraw from the streets, state television announced on Sunday.

"Baghdad operational command decided to lift the curfew in Baghdad at 6am [local time] on Monday," the television said.

The television report said a vehicle ban will however be maintained in Sadr City, Kadhimiyah and Shuala, the three Shiite neighbourhoods most affected by clashes between Shiite fighters loyal to Sadr and the security forces.

At least 90 people have been killed in Baghdad since the fighting began on Tuesday. The Iraqi government has welcomed Sadr's withdrawal of fighters, despite refusal of giving up weapons. (AFP)
