At least 26 people died after a ferry capsized in a river near the Bangladesh capital after it was hit by a cargo vessel loaded with sand on Thursday, police and witnesses said.

"So far 26 bodies have been recovered," a police officer said, adding that the ferry was carrying more than 100 people.

Rescue efforts are on and the death toll could climb, witnesses said.
Rescuers said the sunken ferry, MV Shourav, was lying about five metres under the water in the Buriganga river.

"More bodies may be stuck inside the ferry," one survivor said.
Hundreds of Bangladeshis die in ferry accidents every year, mostly blamed on loading beyond the boats' listed capacity. (Reuters)
