Construction work on the new Dh12 billion Ajman International Airport will begin next year and management of the terminal will be handled by the same company that manages the Frankfurt airport, the emirate’s ruler said.

His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, yesterday reviewed the primary sketches and design of the airport, which will be built in the Manama area. After the design was reviewed by him, official confirmation was given that work on the project will begin in 2008.

Four Spanish firms will jointly construct and manage the airport. Sheikh Humaid was briefed on the plans and design of the airport by a delegation from the four companies.

Sheikh Humaid said the project is essential for the growth and success of the UAE’s aviation sector, especially cargo transportation.

The Ruler said companies with international reputation in the aviation industry were selected to build the project because the emirate wants a world-class airport.

The four Spanish companies have participated in the construction and management of several airports in Europe and other parts of the world, officials said.

Sheikh Humaid said Manama was selected as the location in an effort to expand economic activity into various corners of Ajman.

The airport is expected to create substantial investment and job opportunities for citizens and residents, he said.

The airport, which will be built over six million square metres, will have – apart from the passenger terminal and the arrival and departure lounges – a school for staff training, a free zone, office space and housing units. The technical management of the airport will be entrusted to ICTC, which runs 20 airports around the world. (WAM)
