The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will close Jumeirah Road for one hour at 8pm on Saturday to facilitate an Earth Hour parade, while lights will be switched off on this and other roads in residential areas.

The move is part of the RTA’s participation in Earth Hour, which is a global campaign to raise awareness of climate change by switching off thousands of lights in cities around the world.

Hussain Al Banna, Director of RTA Right-of-Way Services Department, said the authority, in co-operation with Dubai Police, will close Jumeirah Road between the Al Thaniya and Umm Suqeim intersections in both directions to allow an Earth Hour parade to pass.

“The RTA will also reduce lighting on internal roads of 16 residential areas in the emirate of Dubai and switch off lights in the head office of the RTA. Awareness messages of the Earth Hour campaign will be displayed on the VMS of the Intelligent Traffic Systems at various roads of the emirate to get the message of the campaign across to all road users.

“The green campaign is part of an international effort by millions of people who will switch off lights and non-essential electronic devices for one hour at 8pm tonight,” said Al Banna.
