The 2008 launch of an awards scheme to recognise the best energy conservation and management practices in the Gulf region took place in Dubai.
The event was hosted by Dubai Quality Group (DQG), which is dedicated to raising the performance level of the local business environment.
The Emirates Energy Award is presented annually under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The international scheme promotes regional awareness about the role of energy efficiency in ensuring sustainable growth, based on innovative, cost-efficient and replicable measures.
“The inaugural Emirates Energy Award last year was a huge success and motivated individuals, companies and policymakers to strengthen their participation in regional energy conservation efforts,” said Dr Wafi Dawood, vice-chairman of DQG.
“This year we expect to welcome even more participants and witness highly innovative and effective energy conservation and management strategies.
“Hopefully, the award’s second cycle will convince more individuals and corporate institutions to adopt similar energy conservation systems and processes.”
The award ceremony will be held later this year, with the overall winners and runners-up in each of the six categories being honoured.
The categories are Public Corporation Energy Award, Private Corporation Energy Award, Energy Engineer Award, Major Energy Project Award, Minor Energy Project Award and Education and Research Award.
The recipients will be allowed to use the award logo on their marketing and corporate materials for up to three years as proof of their commitment to, and successful implementation of, optimal energy utilisation methods and practices.
The scheme is open to all organisations and individuals in all of the GCC countries. The awards are in line with the UAE’s conservation and environmental protection initiatives as the country plans to invest around Dh168 billion over the next 10 years in environmental and pollution control projects.
The Ministry of Energy recently announced a proposal for a national regulatory framework for the development of the water and electricity sectors in its 16-point 2008-2010 Strategic Plan. The demand for energy is expected to double by 2015.
“I commend this year’s nominees who will be generously sharing their knowledge, expertise, and best practices to augment governmental efforts to promote sustainable development through efficient energy management,” said Dr Dawood.
“I also encourage other organisations to explore the long-term financial gains provided by energy management measures.”
