If you are trying to start the new year with a healthy diet then you will not want to waste your money on the world’s most expensive dessert – the 'Frrrozen Haute Chocolate' – which costs $25,000 (Dh91,750).

The incredibly rich treat offers a blend of 28 cocoas from around the world, infused with 23 carat gold and La Madeline au Truffle from exclusive Knipschildt Chocolatier (which sells for $2,600 a pound) and is served in an edible-gold-lined goblet with a gold and diamond bracelet. It is available at Serendipity 3 – a sweet shop-cum-trinket emporium in the heart of Little Italy in New York City.

The dessert emporium, where artist Andy Warhol was once a regular, teamed up with jeweller Euphoria New York to create the chocolate sundae. It even comes with souvenirs – an 18 carat gold bracelet with a carat’s worth of diamonds – that rests at the base of the goblet and a gold spoon set with white and chocolate-coloured diamonds.

“It took us a long time to experiment with all the ingredients and flavours, and more than three months were needed just to design the golden spoon,” said Stephen Bruce, owner of the popular restaurant.

The emporium already held the record for the most expensive dessert in the world with the $1,000 Golden Opulence sundae, a vast confection of sweetened caviar, gold leaf and Armagnac, served in a Baccarat Harcourt crystal goblet and topped off with a gilded sugar flower and an 18-carat gold spoon. It was hugely popular with rock stars, socialites and other celebrities, but now pales into insignificance when compared to its latest offering.

Both have to be ordered 24 hours in advance directly from Bruce. So far he has received inquiries from Europeans and tourists from the Middle East planning to visit the Big Apple.

The legendary restaurant is filled with Tiffany lamps. On more than one occasion a famous film star or politician has been found dipping into one of the delectable desserts. All are served in mammoth glass dishes and covered in mountains of whipped cream with maple walnut topping.

A sweet world

Founded in 1952, Serendipity 3 was one of the first restaurants in the United States to turn dining into a theatrical experience; to create an ambiance as fun as the food that was served. The dessert emporium fills two floors of a historic townhouse. Decked out with Tiffany lamps, Victorian posters and idiosyncratic adornments, the restaurant takes you into a fairy-tale world.
