Etihad Airways said on Tuesday passenger traffic surged 40 per cent in the first quarter of this year and it plans to add destinations in south and central Asia.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline carried 1.4 million passengers in the first three months of 2008, compared with 1 million passengers in the year-earlier period, it said in a statement.

Etihad will this summer begin flying to Calicut and Chennai in India and plans to fly to Moscow, Almaty in Kazakhstan and the Belarussian capital Minsk early next year, it added.

Chief Executive Officer James Hogan told Reuters in February the airline expects to carry 30 per cent more passengers this year and strong demand in the Middle East would help it withstand any drop in global travel on the back of an economic slowdown. (Reuters)
