The second phase of a major project to widen Emirates Road from three lanes to six in each direction has been completed, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

A section of the highway running from Al Aweer junction to Al Ain junction has been opened to traffic.

“Works completed in this stage are part of a comprehensive project currently under way to widen Emirates Road,” said Maitha bin Adai, CEO of the authority’s Traffic and Roads Agency.

“It covers a section of the road running from the Arabian Ranches roundabout to the outskirts of Sharjah.

“The completion of the second stage means the project is now about to be finished. The first phase, covering a 12km section from the Sharjah border to Al Aweer junction, was opened last August. Phase three – the final stage of the project – extends 10km from Global Village to the Arabian Ranches roundabout and is expected to be ready in April.

“Work on the Dh333 million project started in June 2006. Emirates Road is one of the busiest highways in the whole region. It is a vital inter-emirates traffic corridor as it accommodates about 10,000 vehicles per hour in each direction.

“It has to be developed to avoid traffic bottlenecks at peak hours in certain sectors, considering the expanding property developments and increasing population growth in the emirate.”
