Five civilians killed in UN Darfur peacekeeping crash

Five civilians were killed and more than a dozen others injured when an international peacekeeping vehicle crashed into a bus in Darfur, the African Union-United Nations mission said on Wednesday.

The armoured vehicle from the UNAMID force, which is tasked with providing security across the war-torn region, collided with the bus near Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State.

"The collision resulted in five deaths and 17 injuries. One was a passenger in a mini bus and I believe the rest were pedestrians. The injured have gone to hospital," spokeswoman Josephine Guerrero said.

The accident happened while the UNAMID vehicle was on an official mission, accompanying a humanitarian convoy, the peacekeeping force said.

The Sudan Media Centre, which is close to the intelligence services, listed the dead as four women aged between 18 and 30, and one man. (AFP)
