At least 14 people were killed in a suspected suicide bombing at an election rally on Saturday in northwest Pakistan, the interior ministry said.

"Fourteen people were killed and 24 wounded in an apparent suicide attack at an election rally," interior ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema told AFP.

Police official Mohammed Nabi said a bomb went off at a rally of the Awami National Party – a secular, ethnic Pashtun nationalist group – in the town of Charsadda North West Frontier Province.

The dead and wounded people were being transported to a hospital, he said.

Afrasiab Khattak, the party’s provincial leader and a prominent human rights champion, was addressing the rally but later told Dawn television that he was not hurt. (AP)
