Gunmen stormed into a house in a village in central Iraq on Thursday, ordered women and children out and then shot dead three men before blowing up the building with explosives, police said.

The three men, from the same family, were members of an "Awakening" group, a local Iraqi militia set up to fight Al Qaeda extremists, police Lieutenant Colonel Najim al-Sumadaie told AFP.

The attack took place in Al Muradiyah village near Baquba, the restive capital of the central province of Diyala, about 60 kilometres (35 miles) north of Baghdad, Sumadaie said.

He said control of Al Muradiyah village is divided between Al Qaeda jihadists and the Awakening force, resulting in a bitter turf war.

Awakening groups, made up mainly of Sunni former insurgents, have been battling Al Qaeda in Iraq with the support of the US military for more than a year and have been the target of attack by various insurgent groups. (AFP)
