An Indian man returned home Tuesday after spending 35 years in Pakistani prisons, most of them on death row, on a spying conviction.

Kashmir Singh, who is about 60 years old, was released Monday from a prison in the eastern city of Lahore after being granted clemency by President Pervez Musharraf. Singh spent the night in a luxury hotel before being driven 25 kilometres (15 miles) to Wagah, the border crossing between Pakistan and India.

The white-bearded and bald Singh walked to the border, accompanied by Pakistan’s Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney, who helped secure his release. Singh hugged Burney for a long time, and turned around to wave at scores of journalists and onlookers before stepping across. (AP)
