If you like the high life, and don’t mind shelling out the money for it, then a multi-million dirham penthouse that sits atop a landmark hotel on 25 East Madison Avenue, New York, is just the perch for you.

The Mark Hotel, built in 1927, has been converted into a hotel-cum-apartment building and has been redesigned by legendary French designer Jacques Grange. The redesigned building houses 118 hotel rooms and 42 apartments, including the penthouse.

Louise Sunshine, Development Director for Mark Hotel told Emirates Business: “Jacques has put everything he learned in his long career designing private homes for the likes of Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent and Princess Caroline into this building. He has paid detailed attention to each and every apartment in the hotel as he would to any of the private residences he creates for his world-renowned clients – who are some of the world’s leading tastemakers.”

The sales for the apartments and the penthouse have just started. The 10,000 sqft penthouse with 2,300 sqft of terrace and private rooftop pavilion has been priced at a whopping Dh220 million.

Asked what makes the penthouse so expensive, Sunshine, said: “At Mark Hotel we have put together a collection of the most talented designers in the world, to collaborate under the guidance of Jacques Grange, to create one of the most unique living experiences. Our customers are willing to pay high prices for the five-star services, museum quality design, and easy access to the very best of New York City at their doorstep.”

Apart from the five bedrooms and the private master suite with a sitting room, fireplace and his and hers master baths, there are seven full baths, a reception area, windowed kitchen with a breakfast room, a formal dining room, a pantry, fireplace, a personal two-storey lift and staircase, sky-lit conservatory, a living room under a landmarked copper roof with a 26-foot-high ceiling. The rest of the penthouse has 10.6-foot-high ceilings. It also has a wet bar, exercise studio with steam shower and library with fireplace.

People who buy apartments in Mark Hotel will also have access to services such as 24-hour concierge and a doorman, 24-hour security, fully equipped business centre, limousine services and airplane charter, local and international concierge service, signing privileges and direct billing for the Bar Mark, Sant Ambroeus and Salon Mark.

They will also enjoy a personal shopping and delivery service as well as access to the Mark’s DVD library, travel agents and currency exchange service, supervised childcare, dog walking and petcare service, wireless high-speed internet access throughout, as well as a host of other services.

Even though the interiors of the penthouse have been left raw so that the owner can get it decorated according to his personal taste, the kitchen has been designed by Italian designer Piero Lissoni, working with the Italian design house Boffi. The stylish kitchen comes with custom high-gloss white lacquer upper cabinets and brushed aluminum lower cabinets with recessed handles, honed black granite countertop with custom stainless steel sink, back-painted white glass backsplash, convection wall oven, a glass ceramic gas cook top with integrated control panel, sleek brushed stainless steel microwave oven, etc.

The bathrooms have been designed by Grange, where he has combined French luxury with Swiss precision. The bathrooms come with a custom-designed marble flooring, floor-to-ceiling white marble slab walls and polished nickel-plated custom vanity, nickel-plated framed glass shower door and enclosure and wall-mounted water closet, among others.

Asked why the management opted for foreign designers for Mark Hotel, Sunshine said: “This building is not for everyone. It was created for the best people, by the very best artists. We have had buyers from all over the world. It was done to add an exotic quotient to it. This way it will appeal more to the international buyers.”

The property is being developed by Alexico Group, which boasts 50 years of experience in the fields of development, construction, property ownership and management of Manhattan residential real estate. The group’s projects include some of New York’s most prestigious properties such as The Laurel, 353 Central Park West, The Alex Hotel, The Elektra, The Madison Towers Hotel and The Hotel Pennsylvania.
