Malaysian PM dissolves parliament

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he was dissolving parliament Wednesday to pave the way for general elections.

"The king has given his consent to dissolve parliament, effective today the February 13, to allow the elections to be held," he told a press conference that ended months of speculation.

"The states have been advised to dissolve the state assemblies on the same date," he said.

Abdullah said the Election Commission would decide on the polling date. (AFP)
