Iranian state radio says that a moderate earthquake has rattled a remote area in northwestern Iran. No injuries were immediately reported in the Sunday tremor.

The quake hit the district of Hasahtjin, some 600 kilometers (370 miles) northwest of the capital of Tehran, in the mid-afternoon. The radio said the quake’s magnitude was 5 on the Richter scale.

Iran is located on several seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It gets at least one slight quake on average every day.

A medium-sized quake injured 20 schoolchildren in southwestern Iran in November. In March 2006, three earthquakes and nine aftershocks hit western Iran in quick succession, killing at least 70 people and injuring about 1,200. (AP)
