Moderate quake jolts western Guatemala

A moderate earthquake rattled western Guatemala Friday night, knocking out power in several cities. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 and was centered just offshore in the Pacific Ocean about 65 kilometers (40 miles) south of the city of Mazatenango, according to the US Geological Survey. It struck just before 8 p.m. local time (0200 GMT).

Local radio stations reported power outages in Mazatenango, Quetzaltenango, Coatepeque and parts of the capital.

Callers to Radio Sonora said some homes suffered minor damage and small landslides were blocking roads near Colomba Costa Cuca in the southwest. (AP)
