Armed robbers killed five people in a high-security Yangon suburb where Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi lives under house arrest, officials said on Tuesday.

The family-of-four and their maid were found shot dead in their home on Seinlei Kantha Street, a five-minute drive from Suu Kyi's tightly-guarded house on University Avenue.

The leafy neighbourhood is also home to a state guesthouse expected to be used by UN special envoy to Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, when he visits the former Burma on Thursday.

"The robbers killed them with a 9 mm pistol. We cannot give any further information because the investigation is still going on," a source close to the case said.

The dead family -- a mother, father and their two daughters -- owned a Japanese restaurant on University Avenue, the source said. (Reuters)
