The number of commercial cases handled by Dubai Courts increased by 24.6 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2008.

The number of labour-related cases rose by 116.8 per cent, a senior official has revealed. This sharp increase happened partly because the large number of holidays last December led to many cases being carried forward to the first two months of this year.

"Dubai Courts reported 1,147 labour-related cases for Q1 2009 compared to 529 for the same period of 2008," said Director-General Ahmed Saeed bin Hazeem Al Suweidi. "We reported 557 commercial cases for the same period this year compared to 447 in the same period last year."

"Cases are divided into the restricted category, where the size of the claim is not over Dh100,000, and the full category."
