Call to set up long-term education goals

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, has warned that unless governments set long-term education goals to make their citizens competitive in the global economy, a large segment of the population would not be able to be part of the emerging knowledge-based economies.

Addressing graduates after being honoured with a doctorate by the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Sheikh Nahayan quoted a recent Unesco report that revealed 776 million adults, two-thirds of them women, lacked basic literacy skills and 75 million children were not in school. "This is a tragic situation. How can these people, and through them their countries, ever hope to be a part of the new economies?" he said.
