A lady doctor working in the paediatric care wing of Al Wasl Hospital has been sacked for causing the death of a 11-year-old Emarati girl.

The Director General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) issued the sacking order against the doctor on the grounds of medical negligence.

The action against the Arab doctor was taken after she was found to be responsible for the death.

The decision was taken after an investigation by two committees, one of which was formed by the DHA.

The medical file of the victim was reviewed and the committees also noted down testimonials of the medical treating staff.

Following the results of the investigation, the DHA sacked the doctor and also banned the doctor from practising in the UAE, DHA said in a statement.

This case was registered in August 2009, when the patient, MAA, was brought it to Al Wasl Hospital as she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis.

She was complaining of vomiting and high fever and despite being a critical case, the patient was not admitted in the emergency room.

The patient’s condition deteriorated and she died a day after she was hospitalised, the DHA official explained.

Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General of the DHA said that this decision does not forfeit the right of the family members of the deceased child from filing a separate case in the court and demanding for compensation.

He said that the committee is transparent in its findings and that the DHA views cases of medical negligence stringently irrespective of whether the case is registered against a private or a public hospital.

He also mentioned that the authority has taken action on several medical negligence cases in the last one year and the results range from revoking license of the medical physicians to more stringent action depending on the merits of the case.

The DHA has a Clinical Governance Office, which is part of the DHA Health Regulation Department and is responsible to address medical negligence and/or malpractice complaints filed against medical staff and/or hospitals in the Emirate of Dubai.

These cases are individually reviewed and a committee is formed for each case to ensure through investigation is conducted.
