Dubai Metro gets first carriages

Dubai Metro has taken delivery of its first batch of 10 railway carriages, half of which have already been transported to the Jebel Ali Metro Station to prepare for the technical trial runs, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). 

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said: “The RTA is working hard to conduct the technical trial run of Dubai Metro on the test track at Jebel Ali, in a sector extending 11km from Ibn Battuta Station to Jafza Station.

“A direct electrical current of 750 volts will be connected and the train can run at a maximum speed of 90km per hour on the test track. The rakes will undergo full tests to monitor noise, wobbling and electromechanical compatibility for early detection of faults for troubleshooting.

He said that the first stage, called the “static test” phase, involves placing a stationary train on a track and performing tests covering communication systems, signalling units, power supplies, air-conditioning, on-board electronics and lighting.

The tests will also include integration and co-ordination between various sub-systems and components.

“On passing this first phase, there will be a second phase known as the ‘dynamic test’, without passengers on board. It involves tests of various systems while the train is in motion, including propulsion and brake test, load tests, traction power tests, electromagnetic compatibility tests, automatic train operation tests, communication and speed tests,” Al Tayer said.

“The tests follow the comprehensive technical trial run conducted at the test track at the Wadawaki Factory of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan.”
