Five engineers and foremen employed by the contractor building the hotel, where six workers died in a cement-pouring accident, have been detained for questioning.

The five are employed by Seidco General Contracting, which is working on the Laguna Beach project on Ajman's Corniche where the tragedy happened on Monday. They are being quizzed by Ajman Prosecution.

The bodies of five workers have been removed from the site and a sixth man remained missing last night. Three of the victims were named by police as Karam Zeer, Jasveer Ram and Pavan Kumar. The workers – all believed to be Indians – were buried in cement slurry after steel supports gave way.

"Two bodies were removed on Monday night and a third was removed at dawn yesterday," Lieutenant Colonel Nasser Al Zarri, Head of the Operations at Ajman Civil Defence, told Emirates Business.

Two more bodies were recovered yesterday afternoon and taken from the site after being dug out of the hardened concrete.

"We hope to find the sixth body," said Al Zarri. "Rescue teams have not stopped searching since the alarm was raised at 3.45am on Monday. The cement hardens within an hour and we did not find any of the missing people alive. We feel very sorry about the tragic accident," he said.

Al Zarri said the engineers and foremen were detained pending an investigation and the case had been handed over to prosecutors.

A spokesman for the company said no one was available to comment.
