Ex-minister and two others get jail term

Dubai Court of Cassation yesterday gave a one year sentence to former minister Khalifa Bakhit, Ballayal Madom and Selim Helmi in a case of betrayal of trust. However, it suspended the sentence for three years.

The court also ordered the deportation of Madom and Helmi and referred the civil case to the civil court concerned. The Public Prosecution and plaintiff Maysoun Fahmi Jamal had challenged the not guilty sentence at the Court of Cassation.

The court charged the three defendants with betrayal of trust and said it will explore whether the defendants forced Jamal to sign a partnership agreement that would allow the former minister to acquire a 51 per cent share in a company he jointly owned with her brother, after his death.

The former minister had been acquitted of the fraud and embezzlement charges.
