Government inspectors raided scores of mobile phone shops in Abu Dhabi and warned them to stop selling fake products.

Most of the shops were served with notices after they were caught selling counterfeit mobile phone headsets and chargers branded Nokia.

"These products are not original as they are not made by Nokia. Most of them are made in China, so they are fake," said one inspector from Abu Dhabi Department of Planning and Economy.

"We have served these shops with notices so they will remove all these products. Next time we will not give notices but fines. Repeat offences could result in the closure of the shop."

The raid for three successive days followed complaints by official Nokia dealers and other key suppliers in the capital.

Shop owners in Defence Road, the main mobile telephone market, said they had no idea that these products were illegal.

"We have been selling these products for years and there have no complaint at all," said shop manager Imad Hariri. "Many customers buy these products because they are much cheaper although they are of lower quality."
