Talks on reinforcing Arab unity were held yesterday by the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.

The leaders discussed a range of regional and international issues and underlined their commitment to strengthening unity and fostering joint Arab action. They lent their support to the Lebanese national reconciliation agreement that was concluded recently in Doha.

Sheikh Khalifa expressed hope that Al Assad's official trip would enhance bilateral co-operation. Al Assad said he was happy to be visiting the UAE and the trip was part of regular consultations with Sheikh Khalifa. It came in the context of efforts to broaden the scope of bilateral co-operation in economic spheres. The talks would give an additional boost to the already strong relations between the two countries.

He expressed hopes that UAE-Syrian relations would positively reflect on inter-Arab relations, which he said the two countries were jointly working on furthering.

He said Syria and the UAE were seeking to give momentum to Arab joint action and rapprochement within pan-Arab nationalism.

At the end of the talks Sheikh Khalifa held a banquet in honour of Al Assad and his delegation. Al Assad expressed thanks for the warm welcome and hospitality given to him and the members of his party.

Meanwhile, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces accompanied Al Assad on a tour of the exhibits of the various projects that are coming up or have been planned in the emirate. (Wam)
