The Dubai Criminal Court was forced to adjourn the trial of 25-year-old Asian driver, AS, to March 16 as his lawyer failed to appear in court.

AS is accused of raping and killing a housemaid, which he has denied in an earlier hearing. He was yesterday remanded to custody after his defence lawyer, Abdulhamid Al Kumiti, did not turn up.

The Public Prosecution has brought two charges against the defendant – premeditated murder and rape. The crime allegedly happened when the defendant was ordered by his sponsor to take the maid for a medical test. On the way, the defendant allegedly raped the victim, who threatened to inform the sponsor's wife. Then, the defendant allegedly strangled her to death using her headscarf. Ali Fadhil, an RTA inspector who is the sponsor of both the defendant and the victim, said in his testimony he assigned the defendant to take the victim for a medical test.

Prostitution

A woman admitted a charge of prostitution when she appeared at Dubai Criminal Court. The case was adjourned until February 23 when a verdict is expected. Defendant MJ, 24, an Asian, will remain in custody until then. In another case an employee of the Flora Park hotel in Dubai admitted stealing Dh1,000 and a camera from guests.
