More time for small appliance registration

Dealers, importers and manufacturers of low-voltage household electrical appliances have been given a grace period until the end of May to comply with the obligatory registration clause for such products as per the Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS).

The scheme, which came into effect starting this month, follows a decision taken by the board of directors of the Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (Esma).

Mohammed Saleh Badri, Esma's Acting Director-General, said in a statement yesterday: "The decision of granting the grace period was taken so that all concerned can modify their conditions before the beginning of legal procedures against violators. The was taken in a meeting held in Dubai and attended by the representatives of national factories, dealers, distributors and importers of household electrical appliances.

"During the meeting, specialists at Esma presented detailed explanations of the procedures and conditions for the obligatory registration. The meeting came as part of Esma's efforts to monitor the quality of products in the country. It was also part of efforts to communicate with the private and public sectors, co-ordinate with them and clarify recent developments to them in a way that serves the national economy."
