The UAE Armed Forces signed deals worth more than Dh18.4 billion at the defence expo Idex 2009 – including Dh1.6bn during yesterday's final day.

Major General Obaid Al Katbi, Idex spokesman, said this year's idex was the most successful event since its launch in 1993, especially in terms of the value of contracts. Seven contracts were signed on the last day. They included a Dh205 million contract signed by the UAE Armed Forces with Patria from Finland to purchase eight 120mm calibre mortars. It also sealed a Dh152.8 contract with Abu Dhabi Ship Building Company to purchase 12 patrol boats.

In addition, a Dh184 million contract was signed with the American company HIS to provide technical support, training and to upgrade the Black Hawk helicopters.

Al Katbi said the 10th Idex would be held from February 20 to 24, 2011.

"The UAE Armed Forces have a strategic plan. We had already announced the plan's details. These deals come in the framework of the strategic plan."
