New housing allowance for teaching staff

Abu Dhabi announced a massive increase in housing allowance for its more than 13,000 teachers and other government educational employees to help them face a sharp rise in the emirate's rents.

The Abu Dhabi Executive Council set the new housing allowance at Dh6,000, nearly triple the maximum housing allowance provided previously. The allowance took effect at the start of this month and benefits more than 13,000 employees in the education sector, mostly school teachers.

"This allowance is intended to reduce the burden on the teaching and administrative staff as the sharp rise in rents largely exceeded the previous housing allowance," said Mugheer Al Khaily, director-general of the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

"It will allow them to get proper housing and this will ensure stability for all of them."
