The massive interchange at Arabian Ranches will be opened by the middle of next month, the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) announced yesterday.

And almost 90 per cent of construction work at interchange 5.5 near Jumeirah Lakes Towers on Sheikh Zayed Road is almost complete, said Mattar Al Tayer, the authority’s Chairman and Executive Director.

Al Tayer gave the progress report following a tour of major road projects in Dubai. He was briefed by engineers at the Arabian Ranches site, where Japan’s Taisei Corporation has competed the main construction work.

The Dh409 million scheme is one of the biggest flyovers undertaken by the RTA and consists of 11 bridges and an underpass.

“The project involves widening Umm Suqeim Road from four to eight lanes in each direction along a 2.5km stretch,” said Al Tayer. “It also involves widening Al Qudrah Road from two to four lanes in each direction for 5km from the interchange of the Dubai Bypass Road and erecting traffic lights to serve Auto City and Dubai Studio City.”

Al Tayer said the widening of Al Qudrah Road should be speeded up so it proceeded in line with the main construction work. And he said the highest occupational safety standards should be maintained at all worksites.

Al Tayer continued his tour at interchange 5.5, where Dutco Balfour Beatty has completed the key works. He said the project would ensure free traffic movement in all directions and provide direct access to several major projects including Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Lake Towers and Jumeirah Beach Residence.

The Dh475m free interchange will have five main and multi-level branches. Five flyovers with two or three lanes will cross Sheikh Zayed Road and a bridge will span the Dubai Marina Canal, link up with the western and eastern parallel roads and extend up to Emirates Road.
