The search for 400 hectares of land to build the Dh2 billion Dubai-Lyon City has intensified after a recent meeting between officials from Emirates Investment and Development Company (Emivest) and the city of Lyon in France.

The project, first of its kind in the region, to be built in Dubai in partnership between Emivest and the French city, will feature the French University of Dubai at its centre and have public squares, restaurants, outdoor cafés and museums. The project will also host the cultural, sporting and economic institutions found in the French city.

A team headed by Buti Saeed Al Ghandi, who heads Emivest, met with senior officials from Lyon last week, including Mayor Gerard Collomb, to negotiate agreements with seven Lyon-based institutions in the fields of education, culture and sports. Among them are the University of Lyon 2, the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Institut Paul Bocuse, the Olympique Lyonnais football club, the Fabric Museum as well as Insitut Lumière.

The team's first priority would be to acquire land around the Burj Dubai area, but Emivest has kept its options open and is looking for an alternative piece of land adjacent to the Dubai World Central where the new Al Maktoum Airport is located, Emirates Business has learnt. Dubai-Lyon City will be established on the architectural expertise of Lyon, with the design of buildings, infrastructure and related areas of expertise all being completely masterminded and managed by French professionals, including planner John Paul Lebas. "The city will be organised on European lines," said Lebas.
