'Sponsorship system should be looked into'

The UAE Human Rights Association has called upon the authorities and other relevant parties to relook into the issue employers and employees, especially the sponsorship system.

Speaking on the subject, Abdul Ghafar Hussein, Chairman of UAE Human Rights Association, said: "The sponsorship system is still applied in many GCC states. It is a very undeveloped system and should be changed. But at the same time, we should listen to the employer who spends money on the bringing, training and qualification of worker and then we find the worker disappears. Therefore, we should take the opinion of employers in that regard and the ministry should listen to both parties to be fair."

Hussein said the ministry is due to announce a draft law to cancel sponsorship system and replace it with a more civilised one.

This was told to him by the Labour Minister during his meeting with him a month back, he said.
